Civilizations around the world created textiles using naturally available materials such as flax, hemp, and cotton. In ancient Egypt, linen—derived from flax—was prized for its coolness and breathability, while hemp was grown extensively across China for clothing and ropes due to its rapid growth and durability. The search for green alternatives also inspired new fiber technologies, from regenerated cellulosics like Tencel and bamboo viscose, to experimental fabrics derived from waste products and recycled plastics. These innovations aimed to combine performance with minimized environmental impacts, using closed-loop processes, reduced water and energy use, and lower emissions. Increased consumer demand for ethical and sustainable fashion provided crucial encouragement for the broader adoption of such materials.

Parallel to industrial innovation, there was a growing appreciation for heritage crafts and the ecological wisdom embedded in traditional textile systems.
